The Mock Trial Team at IU Indianapolis depends on local judges, attorneys, and law students to make our tournament a successful learning opportunity for undergraduate students. This invitational is an excellent opportunity for students to grow professionally and gain exposure to Indy’s incredible legal community.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • We are looking for members of the legal community - judges, attorneys, and law students - to serve as judges for collegiate mock trial rounds.
    No prior mock trial experience is required. If you have a legal background and an interest in mentoring the next generation of advocates, we want you in the room.

  • Mock trial is an academic competition in which students perform jury trial simulations. Students take on the roles of attorneys and witnesses, presenting opening statements, conducting direct and cross-examinations, and delivering closing arguments before judges. Competitors are evaluated on their advocacy skills, courtroom demeanor, and performance. Learn more on our Mock 101 page.

  • Each round will have one presiding judge and two to three scoring judges.

    All judges observe the round and evaluate student competitors using a provided scoring rubric. The presiding judge makes rulings on evidence and governs the courtroom. At the end of the trial, judges deliver brief oral feedback to the teams.

    Past volunteers have shared how impressed they were by the skills and professionalism displayed during competition.

  • All rounds take place at the Community Justice Campus (CJC), located at 675 Justice Way, Indianapolis, IN 46203. Parking information, and other logistics, will be shared in a Judge Packet sent in October.

  • The tournament takes place November 14–15 2026 and includes four rounds across both days. Round times are as follows:

    • Saturday (Nov. 14th)

      • Morning: 9:00 AM - 12:30 PM

      • Afternoon: 2:00 PM - 5:30 PM

    • Sunday (Nov. 15th)

      • Morning: 8:30 AM - 12:00 PM

      • Afternoon: 1:30 PM- 5:00 PM

  • Upon arrival, you will check in and head to the jury room for a brief orientation and judge assignments. You will be assigned as either a presiding judge or scoring judge and then proceed to your assigned courtroom, where two university teams will be ready to compete. Full instructions and logistics will be included in your Judge Packet sent in October.

  • We are offering two one-hour ethics CLE sessions during the lunch break each day, free to all registered judges.

    Both sessions have been submitted for Indiana CLE credit (1cr Ethics each).
